Your Design Consultation - What Can You Expect?

The design consultation can be one of the most exciting parts of purchasing a custom costume. Although, for some, it may be a daunting task. But it doesn't have to be.

I have come to realize that not everyone can visualize a costume without a picture or a drawing in front of them. The task of describing what they want proves to be an even bigger challenge. This is where your designer comes your aid.  They can take into account 

the range of motion the dancer needs for certain skills or tricks that may have never crossed your mind before. This is where the designer's knowledge and experience can greatly simplify the process. So, it is important that you are able to convey your ideas and thoughts for them to be able to carry out your vision.

To have your design meeting go more smoothly, iron out a few simpler details ahead of time. Perhaps decide upon the color; one piece or two; skirt or no skirt?. Even the song choice can and dance style can greatly influence your design. Try to have the input from those involved in the making of your solo, like your choreographer or dance teacher. While not everyone needs to be present at the consultation, their input can help guide you and the designer. But also keep in mind that it is only input. You are the decision maker. It is your choice as to how far you want to incorporate their input.

Sometimes cost comes into play that others do not truly take into account. Have a price range in mind that you are willing to spend. Setting boundaries can help in narrowing down choices and streamline your focus.

The dancer will also most likely have their measurements taken. It is best to not to wear loose fitting clothing. A leotard, or what you would normally wear to a dance class would be more appropriate to be able to get the most accurate numbers.

After the initial design consultation, You may be able to schedule a costume fitting. I normally schedule these in the middle of the costume-making process, before any embellishments are attached to the costume base. It is definitely an exciting time! Your costume is almost finished! This is the time to make sure that the costume fits properly. This is the time to address any issues and make adjustments, if needed.

Then,  just sit back and relax. The wait for the finished costume is sometimes the hardest. Adding the embellishments is my favorite part of costume making. I love the look on each dancer's face when they pick up their costume from me. It is the final fitting before it goes home with them. Their look of joy, elation or even their reluctance to change out of their finished costume as they twirl and watch themselves sparkle in my full length mirror, makes me love what I do.
